2016 Oceana Naval Air Station Air Show
We manned a booth at the 2016 NAS Oceana Air Show in Virginia Beach, Virginia on September 9-11.
This year, the NAS Oceana Air Show partnered with the Virginia Beach City Public School System (VBCPS) in order to make a day focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) for the fifth-graders at VBCPS and for all the children who attended.
The Foundation for Underwater Research (FURE) manned a booth to showcase the International Submarine Races (ISR) and encourage the next generation of young men and women to pursue engineering and science.
The ISR is a biennial design competition for human powered underwater vehicles, hosted by the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, which provides valuable educational experiences to the best and brightest engineering and science students from throughout the world.
The race provides a platform for teams at all grade levels to develop a one or two-person “wet” submarine. Crew members breathe SCUBA from the air supply carried aboard the submarine and propel the submarine over an underwater course. Each submarine is unique, designed from “scratch”, and relies upon novel techniques for propulsion and guidance.
