Many folks don’t know that the Foundation for Underwater Research and Education (FURE) is the organization behind the International Submarine Races. FURE is incorporated in the State of Maryland and recognized by the U. S. Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization.
The International Submarine Races is not a legal entity. It is a biennial event sponsored by FURE and staged by FURE volunteers. FURE is also administering an annual scholarship program (two scholarships awarded in 2018!) and pursuing creating web based educational vignettes for aspiring engineers and racers.
The FURE board of directors recently decided to pursue registration of our traditional submarine engineering logo as well as the FURE and ISR names with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The attorney handling the registration recommended the creation of a single design to integrate all three elements that the board of directors wished to protect. This allows for a “3 for 1” single registration instead of the cost of three separate filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The logo above designed by graphic designer Kristin Behrle and approved by the FURE board of directors is now the official logo for FURE and all of its sponsored activities, including the International Submarine Races and scholarship program. The adapted design clearly represents FURE as the parent organization and eliminates any confusion associated with using multiple logos and names for the various activities of FURE.
FURE/ISR volunteers, sponsors, and contestants are authorized to use this new logo in tasteful, professional materials and websites after receiving permission from FURE. Requests for use should be directed to FURE.President@internationalsubmarineraces.org. For more information about FURE and its activities, visit www.internationalsubmarineraces.org.
